Disputes and chargebacks
Sometimes a cardholder asks their bank to reverse a payment. This is called a dispute or chargeback. It can happen if a card was used without permission or someone doesn’t recognise the payment.
We email you when it happens. Stripe holds the amount and a dispute fee from your own Stripe balance while it’s decided, usually over several weeks.
- 1Open Disputes in your Stripe dashboard.
- 2Send evidence before the deadline Stripe shows: the supporter’s message, what the support was for, and any emails with them.
- 3We email you again when the dispute is decided.
Card networks usually keep the dispute fee even if you win. A clear name on bank statements helps prevent disputes.
